Central Jersey Fugitive Shot In Atlantic City, Found With Cocaine Bags: Police

A Mercer County fugitive was accused of having bags of cocaine after he was shot in Atlantic City near Boardwalk Hall, authorities said.

Luis Mateo, 41, of Ewing, was arrested on Sunday, May 12, the Atlantic City Police Department said in a news release on Tuesday, May 14. He was charged with possession of a controlled dangerous substance.

Police responded to a report of a man bleeding near the intersection of Georgia and Pacific avenues at around 5:39 a.m. Officers found Matteo with a gunshot wound and he refused to cooperate with police.

Mateo was brought to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, City Division, with a non-life-threatening injury. Officers followed a trail of blood and found evidence of a shooting nearby on South Florida Avenue.

Police said Mateo had several bags of cocaine and was arrested. He eventually identified himself and investigators learned he had active arrest warrants in Ewing.

Mateo was held at the Atlantic County Justice Facility.
